DELOREAN, aka Sakari Hannula
[WHO?]
Sakari Hannula, aka Delorean/Complex, is a Finnish .MOD composer with a crucial,
pioneering role in the Amiga demo and .MOD-scene in the early '90s. Alongside
Jugi, perhaps the better-known of the original composers in classic demo-group
Complex, he made the music for the seminal Complex music-disc "Book Of
Songs", as well as contributing to DCS' amazing "Finlandia"
music-disc and the soundtrack to Complex's "Delirium" demo. But
he's probably not so well known as other composers of his time, despite the
fact his main body of work, from 1990-1993, was amazingly densely-packed melodic
funk and synthpop in just 4 channels, alternately Tangerine Dream-esque and
slapbass funky in an almost Steely Dan-like way, and a vital influence on
many later .MOD composers.
[OUR TOP 5 .MODs?]
1. "In Flight"
[From Complex's seminal "Book Of Songs" music-disc released in 1993,
this showcases custom samples alongside mastery of the intricacies of real-time
effects, to create a gorgeously textured, soulful funk tune. Pay special attention
to the great song structure and the carefully programmed percussion.]
2 . "Snow-runner"
[Actually released as the soundtrack to the "Vectors For All" demo
back in 1990 when Delorean was a member of Vertigo, you can tell this is an
early tune since it still uses instrument names and the st-xx: prefix. As
such, it's amazing far-ahead for the time, with great arrangements and a startlingly
syncopated turn about 30 seconds in.]
3 ."A Touch Of Green"
[With shimmering synth cords, string plucks and remarkably good-sounding flute
and brass, and all the phrasing and breathing for the leads manually programmed
in to sound realistic, another track from "Book Of Songs" which
still sounds fresh today, despite the age of the tune.]
4 . "Tweaked 2 Fit In"
[From DCS' amazing "Finlandia" music-disc showcasing the best of
Finnish .MOD talent in the early '90s, this light-hearted, funky track hits
up some remarkably good saxophone, vocal hits, and a charming middle eight
starring some woodwind. The track again showcases Delorean's ability to make
naturalistic-sounding lead instruments sound good with clever use of vibrato,
volume, and portamento.]
5 . "Deltasleep"
[Another track from "Book Of Songs", this has a great human-sounding
wah-wah bassline, alongside improvised-sounding leads and a great production
touch. There's a great random-sounding breakdown a couple of minutes from
the start, and again, it sounds amazingly professional for such a small and
tricky-to-utilise format.]
